Describe your career so far?
I have worked in IT for 12 years, with JPM being my 3rd job. I have been with the ETC for 5 and half years now and started with the FX team, which folded as a result of the merger with Chase. From then on I have been part of the Concorde team, spending the first 3 months or so in Paris for an intensive knowledge transfer period that allowed us to migrate the project from Paris to Glasgow.
What made you attracted to a career in IT and anything specific that attracted you to JPM?
The IT attraction was definitely in the problem-solving and logic side required for development, as I come from a strong Maths background. Initially the name JP Morgan itself was the main attraction. As well as being aware of the JPM name I browsed the JPM webpage prior to my first interview. With all its policies and mission statements, it seemed like a completely different world to my previous companies. Of course, the lovely offices complete with Games room added to the impression!
In a male dominated industry what career tips would you give to a female who's just starting up on her career?
I think it can sometimes be intimidating to deal with strong, confident colleagues, be it male or female. I suppose my main tip would be not to go by first impressions when dealing with others but just let someone speak through their work.
Do you think there is enough balance between work and the home for people with families working at JPM?
I think we are getting there here in the ETC and there have been great strides forward over the last 18 months. I believe that JPM itself promotes great policies on Work-Life Balance which have been up and running in other locations, however I think there are other areas could improve.
Are there any initiatives that you think JPM could do or could do better to attract females to the ETC?
I think that Flexible Working is something that is improving within the ETC, but I think that if this benefit was more visible externally, it could encourage a wider range of applicants, both male and female
Is there anything specific you would like the diversity initiative to focus on?
Firstly, promotion of the fact that flexible working and work-life balance is not just for females – there are a number of males on official/unofficial FWA arrangements. Secondly, I would like to promote the fact that FWAs can be successful. The key is finding an arrangement that meets the needs of both the Company and the individual.
